More than 200,000 acres of winter canola are estimated to have been planted in Oklahoma, South Kansas and North Texas for the 2011-12 crop year, reported the Southwest Farm Press. The Great Plains region experienced a record drought in 2011 but received more than 10 inches of rain in the past 90 days, giving local growers a hopeful outlook. One farmer noted that even under drought conditions last year, his best wheat yields came from wheat that followed winter canola.

Sports nutritionist Chris Mohr, Ph.D., R.D., shared heart-healthy tips and CanolaInfo’s Heart-Healthy Dude Food Recipe Collection with Men’s Health magazine. “Fat is fantastic for you … It’s picking the right ones that’s the key,” he said. “Canola oil has the least saturated fat and most omega-3 fat of any cooking oil. And with little flavor but a high smoke point (meaning you can heat it to higher temperature without it smoking), it’s got a ton of uses.” There are 10 dude food recipes made with canola oil like Deep, Dark and Stout Chili that are perfect for game-watching days.

If healthier eating is on your list of resolutions for 2012, look no further. The January 2012 issue of the Harvard Women’s Health Watch offers 12 ways to break old dietary habits and build new ones, including replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat from sources like canola oil – a good source of polyunsaturated omega-3 and monounsaturated fats – to help lower ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol.”

Northstar Agri Industries’ canola processing and refining plant under construction in Hallock, Minn., is on track for operation in spring 2012, reported Portage Online. Northstar CEO Neil Juhnke said the plant will source 40-50 percent of the canola from southern Manitoba, 40 percent from North Dakota and 10-20 percent from Minnesota, with the goal of eventually sourcing more from Minnesota and less from Canada. It will initially process 1,000 tons of canola per day.

As part of Michigan’s “Freeway to Fuels” project, Onsite Energy has developed a fully automated biodiesel processor, which Michigan State University Extension purchased to demonstrate and teach farmers how to make their own biodiesel, reported Earth Techling. These processors can produce 40 to 400 gallons of biodiesel in eight hours.

The question in “Final Jeopardy” – when three contestants wager their money earned from two previous rounds – had to propose the question to the answer “Keith Downey developed rapeseed into this cooking product, now a huge cash crop for farmers in Saskatchewan.” All three contestants answered incorrectly, but two came close to the correct answer, which was, of course, canola oil.
